How do I get my Journeyman Plumbing license in Colorado?

  1. Complete the 6,800 hours of comprehensive, hands-on experience as an apprentice plumber.
  2. Complete an Affidavit of Experience form
  3. Sign up for your Journeyman Plumbers exam on
    • If you pass, you will immediately receive a successful notification and should retain this notification to submit with your application for licensure. The successful notification will provide instructions on how to apply for a license. NOTE: You are not authorized as a licensed plumber until you submit a complete application and it is approved by the Division of Professions and Occupations.
    • If you do not pass you will receive a score report that provides areas that require additional studying in order to pass.
  4. Apply for the license:
    • File a license application with the Board at
    • Upon approval from the Board you will receive a notification email with your license attached.
    • Passing of an examination is not a guarantee of licensure. You must still demonstrate that you meet minimum qualifications for licensure according to standards set by Colorado law.

What should I bring to the Coloradoplumber exams?

  • Two forms of identification, which bear your signature. One of these must be government issued, have your signature and your photograph.
    • Your name as shown on the examination registration must match exactly the name on the photo I.D. you present at the test

How do I know if I passed the Colorado plumber exam?

  • On screen – your result will appear immediately on the computer screen. This will happen automatically at the end of the time allowed for the examination; if you are using review features, you will be able to obtain your result immediately when you indicate that you have finished and would like to see your results.
    • If you pass, you will immediately receive a successful notification.
    • If you do not pass, you will immediately receive an unsuccessful notification on the screen along with a diagnostic report indicating your strengths and weaknesses by examination type.
  • On paper – a score report will be printed at the examination site.

Are there accommodations for individuals with special needs during the plumbing licensing exam?

All examination centers are equipped to provide access in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and exam accommodations will be made in meeting a candidate’s needs. Applicants with disabilities or those who would otherwise have difficulty taking the examination must fill out the form at the end of this Candidate Information Bulletin and fax it to PSI (702) 932-2666. This form also includes out-of-state testing requests.

Does Colorado offer reciprocity for plumbing licenses?

Licensees from another state may be eligible for licensure by endorsement providing that the applicant possesses credential and qualifications that are substantially equivalent to requirements in Colorado for licensure by examination and you must provide verification of all of the following:

  • Completion of a state or federally approved apprenticeship program, or completion of the required years and type of experience for the comparable license.
  • Submit verification from the state licensing agency of successful completion of a comparable state plumbing examination as outlined under "Documenting Plumbing Experience" and based on the currently adopted Colorado Code.
  • Submit a photocopy of your currently held state (not city or county) issued license which you have held for a minimum of six (6) months.
  • Submit a completed application with letters of verification of your plumbing experience as outlined under "Documenting Plumbing Experience" (above) for the license category for which you are applying for endorsement.

An Apprentice must be registered until such time as the individual has actually obtained a Colorado plumber's license. A plumbing apprentice is any individual employed in the plumbing trade that is not currently licensed in the State of Colorado.

Is there any way to be waved from the Colorado plumbing exam?
