Who needs to be licensed for plumbing in Maine?

License Required. A license is required for any person, corporation, partnership or other entity who is engaged in plumbing or performing plumbing installations.

How do I get my Journeyman Plumbing license in Maine?

  1. Meet state requirements
    • A minimum of at least two years with 4,000 hours of work in the field of plumbing installations as a licensed trainee plumber under the supervision of a licensed master plumber;
    • Successfully complete a one-year plumbing program at a Maine Community College. Upon successfully passing the journeyman examination, you must apply for and receive a Journeyman-in-Training license to gain the required licensed practical experience to be eligible for licensure as a journeyman plumber.
  2.  Submit an Examination Application form and $25 application fee to the Board.
  3. Once you receive approval from the Board to take your exam, you must then schedule an appointment to take the exam online or call 800.343.6001 and pay the $75 exam fee
  4. Prepare for your exam.
  5. Once you pass your exam, the Board will mail you a licensing application form.

Are there accommodations for individuals with special needs during the plumbing licensing exam?

Prov complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in providing special accommodations for candidates that require additional assistance during the testing process. If candidates feel that they qualify for a special accommodation during testing, they should contact Prov at (866) 720-7768. Prov will require written documentation from a licensed physician or psychologist documenting the disability and further require a request describing the requested remedy. Prov will then work directly with the candidates to make the accommodations they will need in order to complete their examination

Does Maine offer reciprocity for plumbing licenses?

The board shall issue a license to any person who files a sworn application and who is licensed under the laws of another state or territory of the United States as long as that state or territory has licensing standards and experience requirements at least equivalent to this State's and as long as that state or territory grants similar privileges to persons licensed under this chapter. Reciprocal licenses may not be denied on the basis of current residency.
