    • Copy of Apprenticeship Completion Certificate showing hours, time and trade that was completed.

    • Transcript from an approved engineering technology curriculum (2 years of experience accepted only)

    • Documentation of practice in the fields of stream fitting, hydronics, and industrial piping (2 years of experience accepted only)

    • Accredited Trade School experience proof (Wahpeton in North Dakota, Northern in Havre, Flathead Community College are approved by the board at this time. (2 years of experience accepted only)

What can I expect from the Montana  journeyman plumbing exam?

Multiple choice questions are based on the 2012 Uniform Plumbing Code book as amended and the Statutes and Rules Relating to the Board of Plumbers and Building Codes. The exam is closed book with a two and one half (2 ½) hours time limit. The practical examination includes the hands-on portion consisting of two parts, isometric drawings and a pressure loop that is limited to four (4) hours.

    Code books WILL NOT be provided at the exam site. Code books will be inspected prior to the examination to ensure they are not tabbed. Code books will also be inspected after the examination to ensure examination information was not written in the book. If it is determined that the code book is not authorized in the examination, the department WILL NOT provide a new code book. Any additional materials will not be allowed on site.

How do I know if I passed the Iowa plumber exam?

A minimum score of 70% is required to pass the Journeyman written, Journeyman practical, and Master written examinations. Your results letter will be mailed to your preferred mailing address as indicated on your application within two weeks after your examination date. Please do not call the board office to obtain your score, as it will not be given out over the telephone.

Are there accommodations for individuals with special needs during the plumbing licensing exam?

The Board of Plumbers complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. To ensure equal opportunity for all qualified persons, the Board will make reasonable accommodations for candidates
having disabilities that might affect their taking the licensing examination.

Does Montana offer reciprocity for plumbing licenses?

Montana has reciprocity agreements for Journeyman licensure only with Oregon, Idaho, North Dakota and South Dakota. Montana does not reciprocate a Master license. If you have passed the Journeyman plumbing written and practical exams in one of the states we have reciprocity agreements with, and you do not have any complaints on your active license, you will not have to take the Journeyman exam in Montana. If you have not taken a practical examination, you will be required to in accordance with ARM 24.180.603.

Can I work in Montana as a plumber with my Idaho/North Dakota/South Dakota/Oregon Journeyman license?

No. You must still apply for licensure in Montana by reciprocity.
