Virginia Plumber License General FAQ

What are the types of plumbing licenses available in Virginia?

Individual tradesmen who engage in the trades of electrical; plumbing; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC); gas fitting; water well construction; elevator mechanics; backflow prevention; and building energy analysis. (Although the term "certified" is used, state certification of these trades is mandatory, not optional.)

How do I get a journeyman plumber license in Virginia?
  1. Meet state requirements
    • 4 years of practical experience and 240 hours of formal vocational training OR
    • 5 years of practical experience and 160 hours of formal vocational training OR
    • 6 years of practical experience and 80 hours of formal vocational training OR
    • 7 years of practical experience and 40 hours of formal vocational training OR
    • Associates degree or certificate of completion from at least a two-year program in tradesman related field from an accredited community college or technical school and 2 years practical experience OR
    • Bachelor’s degree or certificate of completion from an accredited college/university in the engineering curriculum and 1 year of practical experience.
    • 10 years of practical experience
    • Hold a Journeyman or Master Plumber license in another state. This evidence shall be submitted with an application to the state with the application fee.
  2. Submit a Tradesman Application and await approval from the board.

How do I get my master plumbing license in Virginia?
  1. Meet state requirements
    • 1 year of practical experience as a journeyman plumber
    • 10 years of practical experience
    • Hold a Journeyman or Master Plumber license in another state
      This evidence shall be submitted with an application to the state with the application fee.
  2. Submit a Tradesman Application and await approval from the board.
